Tourists and residents in Cabo San Lucas are enjoying sunny skies and breathing a sigh of relief now that Tropical Storm Rick has passed the Baja California peninsula. The storm did not cause widespread flooding or destruction in the Cabo San Lucas area but large surf generated by the storm was responsible for the death of a 16-year-old boy and for eroding portions of Medano Beach.
The port remains closed but will reopen Thursday, which will mark the beginning of the Bisbee’s Black & Blue Marlin Tournament, which will run through Saturday. The event is the world’s richest billfish tournament, anglers will compete for $3 million in prize money.

Cabo San Lucas, East Cape get off easy as Hurricane Jimena moves north. Hurricane Jimena made landfall halfway up Mexico’s Baja California peninsula on Wednesday, slapping desert towns with howling winds and rain after drenching the Los Cabos resort area overnight. Jimena, a Category 2 storm, pummeled the peninsula’s west coast with 100 mph winds and driving rain but had dropped considerably in force since the weekend when it blew into a highly dangerous Category 4 hurricane. A hurricane warning remained in effect for the north of the peninsula but civil protection officials said there were no reports of casualties or major damage to property in Los Cabos after Jimena brushed past there on Tuesday. People swept up debris, beachfront restaurants emptied out storm sandbags and hotels began removing boards from their windows as the weather calmed down. But many tourists had already cut their vacations early and flown home.

“This leaves us with a very bad week,” Gonzalo Fanyutti, head of the Los Cabos hotels association told local radio. The U.S. National Hurricane Center said Jimena was now about 30 miles north-northeast of Cabo San Lazaro and moving north-northwest at around 13 mph.

An Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development meeting of officials from dozens of countries to discuss tax havens had to be moved from Los Cabos to Mexico City.

Hurricane Jimena, a dangerous Category 4 storm off Mexico’s Pacific Coast, was on track to buffet resorts on the Baja California peninsula on Tuesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Jimena, a small but powerful hurricane that has intensified quickly since it formed early on Saturday, was packing 145 mph winds with higher gusts, and the Mexican government issued a hurricane watch for southern Baja California. A hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible with 36 hours.
According to the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale, Category 4 hurricanes are “extremely dangerous” and can cause devastating damage if they hit land. The hurricane center said people located in central Baja California peninsula and western mainland Mexico should also monitor the storm’s progress because more watches could be issued on Monday. Jimena is still a safe distance from shore but set to gather steam and brush the upscale resort of Los Cabos on Tuesday, when the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is scheduled to hold a meeting there to discuss tax havens.

A hurricane watch is in effect for Baja California. A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 36 hours.
