Hurricane Jimena, a dangerous Category 4 storm off Mexico’s Pacific Coast, was on track to buffet resorts on the Baja California peninsula on Tuesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.
Jimena, a small but powerful hurricane that has intensified quickly since it formed early on Saturday, was packing 145 mph winds with higher gusts, and the Mexican government issued a hurricane watch for southern Baja California. A hurricane watch means hurricane conditions are possible with 36 hours.
According to the five-step Saffir-Simpson intensity scale, Category 4 hurricanes are “extremely dangerous” and can cause devastating damage if they hit land. The hurricane center said people located in central Baja California peninsula and western mainland Mexico should also monitor the storm’s progress because more watches could be issued on Monday. Jimena is still a safe distance from shore but set to gather steam and brush the upscale resort of Los Cabos on Tuesday, when the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development is scheduled to hold a meeting there to discuss tax havens.

A hurricane watch is in effect for Baja California. A Hurricane Watch means that hurricane conditions are possible within the watch area, generally within 36 hours.

How about trading the posh Cabo San Lucas and Los cabos for some serious dust? Doesn’t sound that good – does it?? It sure does not go with the famous Cabo lifestyle if you read the opening but let me tell you one thing – you are gonna like it!! Does being a modern day cowboy on 50+hp motorcycles “flying” through the Baja Sur landscape raise your interest?? Well, if it does – How about a bunch of desert racing Trophy Trucks, 700 horsepower monsters, moving off road across the Baja Sur desert at speeds you can’t imagine? Still not enough for you CSL visiting speed-freaks?? Let’s bring you to the edge of your seat and throw in some Class 1 unlimited buggies with about 500 horsepower to give you an overview of the event. There are many hard fought for classes in the upcoming Coyote 300 desert race being held this weekend in La Paz. There are over 100 entries in this 15 th edition of the race. A race liked by the locals racers as much by racers coming from up north. They will all compete in this challenging course around the Southern Baja – starting in La Paz Centenario and ending at the finish line at the Tecolote Beach famous for its divine views of the Isla Espiritu Santo. Coming out of La Paz the off-road racers will pass Todos Sandos via Los Inocentes on the Pacific coast of the Baja Peninsula before turning inland and heading over to Los Planes at the Sea of Cortez going north to the finish line at Tecolote.

There is more to it then just the Coyote 300 race, the evening before the race is a huge fiesta at the Malecon in La Paz where you could see the vehicles and racers up close. So get a car and take the 2 hours trip to the city at the bay – La Paz!! It will be worthwhile! And if you are out there and wondering where those desert trophy truck guys are- just follow the dust because that’s pretty much what you’ll see but the thrill of being present makes it all 100% worth it!!

Additions by the editor: if you know your way around ,or have a local drive you, you can basically watch the the top classes pass 3 times if you move along across the Baja Sur!! And you will forget the dust at the huge fiesta taking place after the race at Tecolote beach – enjoy a few cold brews , chips and salsa, and views of the annual bikini contest!!

Visit the Coyote 300 website here or check in at Puro Off Road on race day for the live race web cast (connection permitting). Puro Offroad does twit also here…
